To be fair, few cars actually pace inflation or any form of CPI. Most modern cars are a bargain in those terms, even though some of the highest echelons have inflated much more than mainstream models. Even something as posh as an S-class is significantly cheaper now in adjusted dollars than say 20 or 30 years ago. On the other hand, many other cost of living factors have inflated wildly (housing especially, in my area, producing a couple older generations of virtual lottery winners), but that’s fun for a different discussion.

That’s what I’m being told in the comments which is fair. But it’s not the marketing people’s fault, or the engineers or the accountants, or anyone cashing a check, as with many things, the real evil propositions and abuses are “above their paycheck”

I don’t think believe there are any abuses at all, just saying the car likely won’t (and can’t) pace any measure of inflation. A 45K Supra in 1993 would be nearly 80K now, and the market just wouldn’t support it. LexusGuy is probably correct. It won’t be at a 1993 price, but inflation might not be the real reason.

The “can’t afford it” line is a little irksome, too, but for other reasons.

Well, income inequality has risen dramatically over the decades, they can’t afford it because companies chose to pay themselves higher bonuses or cut some costs rather than pay better wages, NAFTA didn’t help because instead of hiking wages here (which they did, initally) they played the same card here: inflation goes up, CPI goes up, but wages remain mostly stagnant, that’s why many have left the old poverty line, but still live. like before

Well, I read the “can’t afford it” line as mocking some by attributing that to inflation, rather than the socio-economic failures that you mention, or being like most people and not having parental largesse funding them a nice new car.

50k in 1997 is equivalent to 50k today because of stagnant (and sometimes even falling) wages. People can’t afford new cars anymore.

But I agree that the Supra has never been a cheap car.

And of course, the Supra did go from being a special version of teh Celica (“Celica Supra”) to being its own car, with the resultant higher price.
